Transport & Getting Between Stops
How do students get from Bath to Cardiff on 21 Jun?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary shows a coach to Blaenavon + South Wales Valley from Bath on 21 Jun, but gives no details on how students travel from Bath to Cardiff afterwards (or whether the coach drops in Cardiff). Is this self-arranged? Is there a group coach? Where does it depart from and what time?
How do students get from Cardiff to Liverpool on 22 Jun?
→ Prof. Johnson
The Cardiff day (WSA Summer Show, Chapter Arts, St Fagans) ends with an overnight in Liverpool, but no transit information is provided. A direct train Cardiff→Liverpool takes approximately 2.5–3 hours. Is this self-arranged, or is there a group booking?
What is the coach pick-up location and time for the Bath/Somerset day (19–20 Jun)?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary notes "coach pick up will be from a central location — TBD." Students staying in Bath need to know where and when to meet the coach for the Avebury + Bruton day.
How does the Highlands transport work — are faculty vans covering all legs from Glasgow onwards?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary mentions "vans to Crannog Centre + Cairngorms locations" for the Dufftown/Highlands leg, but it is not clear which specific legs are covered by faculty vans (Glasgow → Dufftown? Dufftown → Highlands? Skye → Fort William → Edinburgh?) and which students must arrange independently.
How do students get from London to Copenhagen on 3 Jul — is a group flight being arranged, or is this fully self-booked?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary notes students "depart London for Copenhagen or Chicago" on 3 Jul. No group flight arrangement is mentioned. Students choosing Copenhagen should book their own London→CPH flight, but should confirm this is not a group booking before doing so.
Is the Northumberland stop on 1 Jul (en route London) a brief visit or an overnight? Where exactly?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary says "TRAIN to London (stop in Northumberland)" — it is not clear whether this is a day visit only (train continues same day to London) or requires an overnight in the Morpeth/Northumberland area. Students need to know whether to book a night there before London.
Accommodation
Is faculty making a central booking for Dufftown (25–26 Jun), and if so when will it be confirmed?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary says faculty "will likely make a central booking for all" for the Highlands leg. Students should not book independently until this is confirmed. There is only one small B&B in Dufftown (Abbeyfield) with very limited availability — if students need to self-arrange, they should know as soon as possible.
Is the overnight on 27–28 Jun in Fort Augustus or Skye (Portree) — which is confirmed?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary lists the overnight as "Fort Augustus or Skye (TBC)" and notes it is likely part of the faculty central booking. Students cannot book independently until the location is confirmed — both Morag's Lodge (Fort Augustus) and Portree SYHA (Skye) are listed as options in the itinerary.
Does the Northumberland visit on 1 Jul require an overnight? If so, where?
→ Prof. Johnson
If the train stop in Northumberland involves more than a brief visit (e.g. a half-day or full day), an overnight in Morpeth or the surrounding area may be needed before continuing to London. This is not addressed in the itinerary and no hostel is listed for this area.
For London Visit 1 (14–18 Jun) — are students expected to stay in the same hostel all 4 nights, or split between hostels for different area days?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary covers Central, East, West, and Drawing Matter/Soane across 4 days in London. The accommodation guide lists YHA London Central as the top pick and notes it is a "good base for multiple nights given the range of areas." Confirm whether one booking for all 4 nights is recommended, or whether splitting across hostels (e.g. St Paul's for City days) is worth it.
Studio, Drawing Kit & Assignments
Are there any additional drawing supplies beyond those listed in the drawing kit PDF?
→ Prof. Kowalczyk
The drawing kit PDF notes that professors may provide or recommend additional surfaces (postcards, sketchbooks, etc.) for specific assignments on the go. Students should confirm whether there is anything additional to purchase or prepare before departure, beyond the required supplies listed in the kit.
What are the specific daily sketchbook documentation requirements?
→ Prof. Kowalczyk
The packing list and travel documents refer to daily sketchbook documentation as a requirement but do not specify format, scope, or how documentation is submitted or reviewed. Clarify expectations before departure so students come prepared.
Are there specific sites where the Sennelier accordion sketchbooks will be used?
→ Prof. Kowalczyk
The drawing kit PDF says accordion sketchbooks will be used "on special occasions and at specific sites." It would help students to know which sites in advance so they can have the right book in their day bag on those days.
What knitting/crochet project(s) are the stitching supplies for?
→ Prof. Kowalczyk / Prof. Mills
The drawing kit requires knitting needles, yarn (one skein, DK/3 weight), and an optional crochet needle. It would help students to know the intended use or project so they can choose yarn colour/weight thoughtfully and come with the right needles.
Chicago Weaving School workshop (26 May) — is this confirmed and where is it?
→ Prof. Mills
The itinerary lists the Chicago Weaving School workshop as TBC alongside the Erik Gustafson woodworking visit on 26 May. Students need confirmation of whether this session is happening, and if so where and at what time.
Erik Gustafson woodworking studio visit (26 May) — is this confirmed and where is it?
→ Prof. Johnson / Prof. Kowalczyk
Listed as TBC in the itinerary. Students need a confirmed location and time.
Logistics, Conduct & Practical
Which transit legs between cities are faculty-arranged vs. student self-arranged?
→ Prof. Johnson
The travel document states "some connections between cities and towns will be arranged by the faculty… some connections you will need to purchase directly." A clear list of which specific legs are faculty-arranged (and thus should not be self-booked) versus student-arranged would prevent both duplicate bookings and students missing connections.
What is the daily meeting time and location format — how will students be notified each day?
→ Prof. Johnson
The itinerary emphasises "the train cannot wait for you" and timeliness is essential. Students need to know how daily meeting times and locations will be communicated — group chat, email, or a set standing time each morning?
Is there a recommended group messaging platform for the trip?
→ Prof. Johnson
With Wi-Fi-only phone use recommended, a platform like WhatsApp or Signal (which work over Wi-Fi) would be the likely group communication method. Confirm the preferred platform so students can install it and join any group before departure.
Is the SYHA membership card worth purchasing, and does the program bulk-purchase them?
→ Prof. Johnson
SYHA membership saves money across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Portree, and Fort William — four stops. Students should confirm whether the program arranges group membership, or whether they should purchase individual cards before departure (approximately £10 each from hostellingscotland.org.uk).
What is the recommended daily budget per student?
→ Prof. Johnson
The travel doc references "the estimated travel budget for the program" but does not give a figure. Students need a target daily spend to plan their finances — accommodation, food, and transit costs vary significantly between London/Copenhagen and the Scottish rural legs.
